Ezetimibe is an antihyperlipidemic effective at lowering LDL cholesterol levels in patients age 10 and up. Patients typically buy ezetimibe as the more widely known Zetia or Ezetrol.

As the only medication being taken, ezetimibe is very easy to use:

• Take 10 mg once per day.
• Food is optional.

If also taking a bile-sequestrant, such as Questran, ezetimibe should be taken 4 hours before or 2 hours after. If taking other medications, such as simvastatin, dosage may need to be adjusted down to 2.5 mg or 5 mg per day. 10 mg per day should not be exceeded.

Ezetimibe can be used as long as needed, provided no adverse effects develop. Patients often use the medication for years, and may buy ezetimibe for the remainder of life.

The exact mechanism by which ezetimibe works is unclear, but the medication is known to inhibit cholesterol absorption in the small intestine and lower the amount available to the liver, forcing the liver to rely on cholesterol in the blood instead. This action should ultimately lower circulating blood cholesterol.

Precautions & Side Effects

Vytorin is generally a very safe medication, with the only true contraindication being hypersensitivity (allergic) to it.

Side effects are generally mild and not cause for concern; they typically stop occurring after the first few weeks of treatment:

• Joint pain
• Back pain
• Headache
• Drowsiness
• Depression
• Stomach upset
• Tingly feeling
• Cold-like symptoms

Patients who buy ezetimibe should be aware that, though rare, use of this medication is associated with rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which skeletal muscle tissue breaks down. This can ultimately lead to kidney failure and paralysis, if allowed to continue. Patients should attend regular doctor visits so the complication can be screened for, and alert for symptoms:

• Muscle weakness
• Muscle tenderness
• Muscle pain
• Decreased urine
• Dark urine

If experienced, contact your doctor right away. Again this is a very rare side effect, and is reversible if caught early. Attending regular doctor checkups and staying alert for side effects minimizes risks.
